Sunflower
In the embrace of a sunflower patch stands a resplendent dark-skinned woman, her essence
intertwined with the very essence of the sunflowers around her. Like the intricate spiral pattern of the sunflower’s florets, her strength and beauty radiate outward, each facet a testament to resilience and grace. Just as the sunflower’s flower head houses countless florets, she carries within her the potential for boundless growth and contribution. The sunflower’s abundance of seeds mirrors the prolific endeavors of Black individuals throughout history, their labor and contributions sowing seeds of progress and nourishment for generations to come. Just as the sunflower’s seeds are dispersed to provide sustenance, so too have Black people enriched society with their talents and efforts, despite facing systemic barriers and injustices. Yet, like the sun’s rays that offer both benefits and risks, her journey, too, is a delicate balance -nourishing her spirit with the warmth of sunlight, while navigating the shadows of systemic racism. In her presence, we find a reflection of nature’s resilience and the enduring spirit of a people whose contributions, like the sunflower’s seeds, sustain and enrich us all.
