Throughout the final four years of his incarceration, Eddie Herena worked as a photographer for the San Quentin News. His work has been published in Rolling Stone, The Guardian, The Athletic, Mecury News, The Boston Globe, and Francisco Chronicle. Herena is a TEDx speaker who also appeared in the award-winning documentary The Prison Within. He was recently celebrated by the San Francisco Foundation, one of the nation's largest community foundation dedicated to social justice.
After 14 years of incarceration, he became a father on April 4, 2020. Herena works as a freelance photographer whose portraits and photo essays have appeared at SF Arts, Prison Journalism Project, SF Camerawork, Variable West, Ear Hustle, Thacher Gallery, and the University of San Francisco.
